About Huron Housing & Redevelopment Authority

The Huron Housing & Redevelopment Authority was formed in 1969 by the Huron City Commission. The Authority operates independently but is a component unit of the City of Huron and is governed by a five member Board of Commissioners who are appointed by the Mayor for the City of Huron.

The Housing Authority is a public housing authority as defined by the US Housing Act of 1937. It is a quasi-public body corporate as defined by South Dakota Codified Law and operates in accordance with South Dakota statutes.

The Housing Authority administers 251 vouchers under the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. The Section 8 Program is tenant based rental assistance for low-income families and individuals which is administered in accordance with federal regulations. The Housing Authority has a Joint Powers Agreement with the Beadle County Commission that allows the Housing Authority to serve low income families/individuals under the Section 8 Program throughout Beadle County, South Dakota.

The Housing Authority owns and operates the Manor Apartments which is a 26-unit supportive housing project subsidized with Section 8 vouchers. This facility was constructed in 2003. The Housing Authority also owns and operates the Donnie Wahl Apartments which were constructed in 1999. This building consists of 20 units and is also a supportive housing project subsidized with Section 8 vouchers.

The clientele for these two complexes are non-elderly, low-income, disabled individuals who receive supportive services through Community Counseling Services and/or the Huron Area Center for Independence.
